Tony Robinsons History of Britain: Series 1
Tony Robinson explores the history of the nation through the everyday lives of ordinary people.
1) Tudors
Tony begins by looking at life during the reign of Tudor king Henry VIII. Tony talks about the role of executioner Thomas Grimes, and reveals how Richard Roose rose from pot washer to being the cook for the Bishop of Rochester.
2) Victorians
Tony explores the lives of people from the Victorian era, including a 13-year-old girl who worked 14-hour shifts in a Bryant & May factory in London's East End, a woman who worked down a mine at Knowles Pitt near Bolton and a navvy who blasted tons of rock from the Highlands to help construct an ambitious water channel.
3) Georgians
The actor explores the lives of people from the Georgian era, including the stories of gin entrepreneur Elizabeth Bowman, who fell foul of the law when her enterprise was made illegal, and coach driver Jack Rann, who became a highwayman.
4) Second World War
The actor meets Eastender Babs Clark, who was just eight when the Second World War began. Like so many, Babs depended on the newly built Bethnal Green Tube station as an air raid shelter during the Blitz. It was akin to an underground town, boasting a library, doctor and community hall. However, tragedy struck during one night raid, and her family was lucky to get out alive. The presenter also meets Maisie Lanyon, who was just five-years-old when the Germans invaded Guernsey.
