Bach - Second Day of Christmas Cantatas -BWV 40-121-57-248,2_MP3_256kbs

BWV 40-121-57-248,2;Johan Sebastian Bach Cantatas;Netherlands Bach Collegium, directed by Pieter Jan Leusink
Music:Classical:MP3:Bach:Cantata

Cantatas were composed for use in the Lutheran church by Johann Sebastian Bach. Here are the cantatas for the Second day of Christmas
List: Darzu ist erschienen der Sohn Gottes, BWV 40, 26 December 1723
Christum wir sollen loben schon, BWV 121, 26 December 1724
Selig ist der Mann, BWV 57, 26 December 1725
Und es waren Hirten in derselben Gegend 26 December 1734 (Christmas Oratorio Part II)

BWV 40: Dazu ist erschienen der Sohn Gottes - For this the Son of God has Appeared
(Cantata for 2nd day of Christmas )
List: 1-Chorus: Dazu ist erschienen. A festive opening chorus in imitation. F Major
2-Recitativo (Tenor): Das Wort ward Fleisch und wohnet in der Welt. Secco recitative. F Major-Bâ™ Major
3-Choral: Die Sünd macht Leid. The first of three (plain) chorales in this cantata. g minor
4-Aria (Bass): Höllische Schlange. "A movement of full-blooded drama"1. d minor
5-Recitativo (Alto): Die Schlange. Recitative with string accompaniment. Bâ™ Major
6-Choral: Schüttle deinen Kopf und sprich. The second chorale. d minor
7-Aria (Tenor): Christenkinder, freuet euch! Many elaborate melismas give this movement too a joyous character. F Major
8-Choral: Jesu, nimm dich deiner Glieder. The final chorale and movement of this cantata. f minor

BWV 121: Christum wir sollen loben schon - Christ we shall praise splendidly
(Cantata for 2nd day of Christmas )
List: 1-Chorale: Christum wir sollen loben schon [schön]. A choral motet—each line has an imitative section with the soprano singing the chorale tune as cantus firmus. The sound, perhaps due to the ancient form, is firmly rooted in the past. e minor-f♯ minor
2-Aria (Tenor): O du von Gott erhöhte Kreatur. An interesting phrase structure of 12 measures begins the aria; the oboe d'amore gets quite a workout in the process. The fluctuation between the tonic and relative minor illustrates the dual nature of the text. b minor
3-Recitativo (Alto): Der Gnade unermeßlichs Wesen. Secco recitative, with an interesting final cadence. D Major-C Major
4-Aria (Bass): Johannis freudenvolles Springen. Accompanied by all the strings, this attractive movement is full of complex imitation, but is still euphonious and pleasing, with no need for deep analysis to discover its full pleasures. C Major
5-Recitativo (Soprano): Doch wie erblickt es dich in deiner Krippen? Secco recitaitve. G Major-b minor
6-Choral: Lob, Ehr und Dank sei dir gesagt. A plain chorale setting. e minor-f♯ minor

BWV 57: Selig ist der Mann - Blessed is the man, ‘’Dialogus’’
(Cantata for 2nd day of Christmas )
List: 1-Aria (Bass): Selig ist der Mann. One of the more richly scored movements, with oboes doubling the strings. The aria is in ‘’Bar’’ form (AAB). The bass part is notable for its use as a sustained expressive voice, instead of carrying the thematic material, at least at first. g minor
2-Recitativo (Soprano): Ach! dieser süße Trost. Secco recitative. Eâ™ Major-c minor
3-Aria (Soprano): Ich wünschte mir den Tod, den Tod. The highly chromatic thematic material gives expressive force to this aria. c minor
4-Recitativo (Soprano, Bass): Secco recitative. Ich reiche dir die Hand. g minor-Bâ™ Major
5-Aria (Bass): Ja, ja, ich kann die Feinde schlagen. The longest movement by far, this aria is a radiant expression of joy. Bâ™ Major
6-Recitativo (Soprano, Bass): In meiner Schoß liegt Ruh und Leben. Secco recitative. Eâ™ major-d minor
7-Aria (Soprano): Ich ende / Behende / Mein irdisches Leben. “Music of aching, passionate bliss”1. The opening theme is notable for its extensive range of two octaves and a third. g minor-Bâ™ Major
8-Choral: Richte dich, Liebste, nach meinem Gefallen. A plain chorale setting, with voices reinforced by all the instruments, including a return of the doubling oboes. Bâ™ Major

BWV 248: Weihnachtsoratorium, 2. Und es waren Hirten in derselben Gegend - Christmas Oratorio, For the Second Day of Christmas
(Cantata for 2nd day of Christmas )
List: 1-Sinfonia. A siciliano including, unusually, both oboes d'amore and oboes da caccia. The relaxed tone of flutes and strings contrast with reedy oboes (but no bassoon). G Major
2-Evangelista: Und es waren Hirten in derselben. Secco recitative. e minor-b minor
3-Choral: Brich an, o schönes Morgenlicht. A plain chorale setting. G Major
4-Evangelista, An Angel (Soprano): Und der engel sprach zu ihnen. Recitative with string accompaniment. D Major-b minor
5-Recitative (Bass): Was Gott dem Abraham verheißen. Recitative with oboe chords (same 4-part scoring). G Major-e minor
6-Aria (Tenor): Frohe Hirten, eilt, ach eilet. Obbligato flute and pizzicato basses give this minuet a feel well suited to the shepherds here depicted. The long melismas and virtuosic flute of the section eniiven the movement. e minor
7-Evangelista: Und das habt zum Zeichen. Secco recitative. G Major-a minor
8-Choral: Schaut hin, dort liegt im finstern Stall. A plain chorale setting. C Major
9-Recitative (Bass): So geht denn hin, ihr Hirten, geht. Recitative with oboe chords (same 4-part scoring). The sextuplets and repeated quavers of the second half again fit the shepherds. a minor-G Major
10-Aria (Alto): Schlafe, mein Liebster, genieße der Ruh. All four oboes come back for this pastoral aria, drones and all. The adventurous harmonies, however, assure the listener of an interesting aural experience. The flute is constantly doubling the soloist. G Major
11-Evangelista: Und alsobald war da bei dem Engel die. Secco recitative. D Major
12-Chorus: Ehre sei Gott in der Höhe. A chorus for the entire instrumental and vocal ensemble; formally, the chorus is much like a motet. The repeated baseline of the first section, the pedal point of the second, and imitation of the third repeat before the close of the movement. G Major
13-Recitative (Bass): So recht, ihr Engel, jauchzt und singet. Secco recitative. G Major
14-Chorale: Wir singen dir in deinem Heer. A 4-part chorale with the sinfonia returning in between phrases. G Major
