Durante un volo di trasferimento l'aereo di una compagnia petrolifera statunitense, un bimotore da trasporto Fairchild C-82 Packet, condotto da Frank Towns, un pilota veterano di guerra ormai in declino e afflitto dai rimorsi, e dal suo ufficiale di rotta alcolizzato Lew Moran, parte sulla rotta che lo conduce da una stazione estrattiva in pieno deserto del Sahara verso la costa del Mediterraneo. A seguito di una violenta tempesta di sabbia che intasa i motori, il capitano Towns è costretto a un atterraggio di fortuna.
