Il Maggiore dell'USAF Mitchell Gant, un veterano della guerra del Vietnam, è incaricato di rubare un avanzatissimo prototipo di caccia sovietico, il MiG-31 Firefox, capace di velocità fino

a Mach 5, invisibile ai radar e dotato di potentissime armi che possono essere controllate dal pilota attraverso l'uso di una speciale interfaccia mentale con la sola forza del pensiero.

Aiutato dalla sua conoscenza del russo e da una rete di dissidenti e simpatizzanti, Gant riesce a infiltrarsi nell'Unione Sovietica e a raggiungere l'immaginaria base aerea di Bilyarsk,

dove si trovano i due prototipi del Firefox. Il suo compito è quello di rubarne uno e portarlo negli Stati Uniti perché possa essere studiato ed esaminato. Ma il KGB è già sulle sue

tracce...
