   "Florence Farley, a girl from Santa Monica, California in her late teens, and a tennis prodigy, is torn between fulfilling the dreams of her ambitious mother Millie, who has planned her tennis career, or her own dreams of being with the man she loves.

  Florence has a chance meeting with Gordon McKay, the nephew of a wealthy town figure. Invited to play tennis at the local country club, she defeats him easily. Her prowess at the game causes J.R. Carpenter, the country club's manager, to offer Florence a membership there, plus a trip to Philadelphia to compete for the national junior championship."

   The career of Ida Lupino as a director was recently published in book form by

Therese Grisham and Julie Grossman called:  Ida Lupino, director : her art and resilience in times of transition.  I read it cover to cover from my local library.



  Ida Lupino at one time was the only woman director in Hollywood.  I think the length of time was three years.  As an actress she is well- known. But as a director she did film and television episodes with craft and that is made clear in a YouTube interview with Grisham.  I'll put the link to that in the NFO. Hard Fast and Beautiful, while significant for introducing her star Sally Forest,  is not one of the groundbreaking films for which Lupino will be remembered.    Lupino did the first episode of the television version of Rod Serling's "The Twilight Zone."  Lupino worked widely in television for episodes of westerns,  Honey West and many others as the projects came available.



 The book by Therese Grisham introduced me to another idea captured in the film and expanded on in Grisham's work.  That is how settings for film mirrored the time.  It's something she calls Domestic Noir and I'm looking forward to that research whenever it comes out.



  The torrent copy of this film I found with the title as " 1951 -- Lac¦ºos de Sangue (Hard, Fast and Beautiful) " and appears first in the NFO About in this folder.    It was not until that book on Ida Lupino as director that collections have appeared with her other feature films.  The Grisham book was advertised in Film Comment but I do not know that they ever reviewed it.  The film is currently on DVD as well. The poster art could have been a lot different but that was a style at the time.  It made me think of the other title on my list about Pulp Fiction Art.  But Lupino would go on to tackle subjects such as rape and unwanted motherhood -- even bigamy -- long before anyone else attempted such topics being produced as Hollywood features.



 This film is not in the Ida Lupino Film Director bluray box.
