Het verhaal speelt zich af in Engeland, tijdens de jaren net voor de Eerste
Wereldoorlog, en schildert het portret van een complexe gemeenschap. Hoewel
het landgoed al vele generaties de thuishaven is van de adellijke Crawleys,
is het immers ook de plek waar de bedienden - binnen een strikte hiërarchie
hun leven doorbrengen, met al hun grote dromen en kleine kantjes. Ook hun
motieven blijken erg uiteenlopend. Terwijl sommigen de familie en levensstijl
van Downton hondstrouw zijn, beschouwen anderen het landgoed als een
tussenstadium naar een andere, betere betrekking of als een plaats waar je
liefde of avontuur kunt vinden. Het enige verschil is dat zij zowat alle
familiegeheimen kennen, terwijl de familie nauwelijks we et wat hen beroert.
Ondanks de vaak heftige gevoelens die onder de oppervlakte borrelen, biedt
Downton iedereen houvast. Het is een serene, rustgevende plaats waar ieder zijn
plek heeft en kent. Een plaats die er, zo lijkt het althans, altijd zal zijn.
Wat familie noch personeel echter beseffen, is dat de wolken van het conflict
dat alles op zijn kop zal zetten, zich al boven hun hoofden aan het samenpakken
zijn...

1923. A year has passed and Edith returned from Switzerland having secretly
had her baby and given her up for adoption. The family and staff journey to
London for debutante Lady Rose to be presented to the king. Martha Levinson
and her son Harold also turn up and Mary meets both Anthony and Charles who
openly vie for her attention. Rose goes to a club with married friend Freda
Dudley-Ward from whom the card sharp Sampson steals a love letter from the
Prince of Wales. Mary and Charles endeavour to retrieve it in vain though the
escapade brings them closer but, after John has obtained it, Mary is annoyed
to learn from Anthony that the supposedly republican Charles is himself an
aristocrat's heir. Mrs Hughes and Mary discover that John was indeed in
London on the day of Green's death but agree to keep quiet about it. Martha
attracts gold-digging admirer Lord Aysgarth but sees through him and turns
down his proposal though Harold, to his surprise, charms Aysgarth's daughter
Madeleine and ...
