St. Birgitta of Sweden (1303-1373, canonized 1391) was one of the most charismatic and influential female visionaries of the later Middle Ages. Altogether, she received some 700 revelations which dealt with a variety of topic ranging from the spiritual (the Annunciation, purgatory, the Avignon controversy...) to the mundane (the Black Death, knights, the Hundred Years' War...). They were collected and organized by her confessors, circulated widely throughout Europe and long after her death, and commented on by several significant people during the Renaissance and Reformation including Cardinal Juan Torqemada and Martin Luther. Birgitta was also the founder of a new contemplative order, still in existence, is the patron saint of Sweden. These are the first two of four volumes (I don't have v.3, published 2/2012; v. 4, pending).
