Sherman, Sandra - Invention of the Modern Cookbook

Sherman traced the origin of modern cookbook's to the seventeenth century. While skilled chefs developed the first ones, by the nineteenth century affluent women were publihing more of them (and included tips on managing servants and general etiquette). Current cookbooks combine the "skilled chef" with extras--menu planning, technique section, etc.--that people take for granted.
