The Prom, film diretto da Ryan Murphy, racconta la storia di una troupe di attori di teatro, tra cui Dee Dee Allen (Meryl Streep), più volte vincitrice del Tony Award. La star ha di recente collaborato con Barry Glickman (James Corden) nel musical dedicato alla first lady Eleanor Roosevelt, ma la piéce non ha avuto un buon esito. Dee Dee decide di rialzare la sua carriera, ormai in declino a causa dell'età, cercando una causa di beneficenza a cui partecipare insieme a Barry e ad altre due star cadute in disgrazia, la corista di Broadway Angie (Nicole Kidman) e l'attore Trent Oliver (Andrew Rannells).
