Prima a Fiumicino, poi sull'aereo che li porta in Australia, si incontrano un giovane prete, don Vincenzo Ferrari, e Susy Macaluso, prostituta (ma al compagno di viaggio s'è ben guardata dal dire la verità). Il caso vuole che i due si ritrovino a Woolgoolgaringa, uno sperduto villaggio minerario abitato soprattutto da italiani, che per don Vincenzo è sede di missione e per Susy l'esercizio estivo della sua "professione". Il buon sacerdote, che ha finalmente capito di che vive la ragazza, si adopera, per ricondurla a una vita proba, con ogni mezzo: sottoponendosi a una difficile prova (dormire una notte con lei, senza toccarla) e prendendo a pugni il suo protettore. La rissa gli costerà il ritorno in Italia, dove Susy, nel cui animo qualcosa è davvero mutata, lo seguirà.
