The Illusionist è un film del 2005 diretto da Neil Burger, liberamente ispirato al racconto Eisenheim the Illusionist, scritto da Steven Millhauser, che racconta la storia di un illusionista della Vienna Vittoriana.

Eduard Abramovitz (Edward Norton) è un adolescente innamorato e ricambiato dalla bella Sophie Von Teschen (Jessica Biel). Ai due ragazzi è proibito vedersi, in quanto lui è figlio di un umile falegname mentre lei è una duchessa. Continuano a incontrarsi di nascosto, ma un giorno vengono scoperti e separati con la forza.

Quindici anni dopo, Eduard è diventato un rinomato illusionista, il cui nome d’arte è Eisenheim. Il mago fa così ritorno a Vienna per tenere uno spettacolo di magia. Durante l’esibizione, Eisenheim incontra Sophie e scopre che è promessa sposa del principe ereditario Leopoldo (Rufus Sewell), un uomo che si dice sia brutale nei confronti delle donne e che in passato ne abbia addirittura assassinata una.

Eisenheim, che non ha mai dimenticato la sua amata, chiede a Sophie di fuggire con lui, ma la donna ha paura che vengano braccati e giustiziati. La duchessa gli rivela inoltre che il Principe Ereditario sta pianificando un colpo di stato contro il suo anziano padre, l'imperatore Francesco Giuseppe I.

Nonostante i suoi timori, Sophie cerca di porre fine al suo fidanzamento. Leopoldo, in preda all'ira, reagisce inseguendola nelle scuderie con una spada, in piena vista dei domestici. Il corpo della donna viene scoperto la mattina dopo nel bosco di Vienna e un uomo sconosciuto viene accusato del suo assassinio. Questo getta Eisenheim in una profonda depressione. Dopo qualche tempo, l’illusionista acquista un teatro e inizia una nuova serie di spettacoli di magia, questa volta concentrandosi esclusivamente sull'evocazione degli spiriti dei morti.
