Nell'Ulster un commando di terroristi dell'IRA rapisce in un parco-giochi Jody, un soldato inglese di colore che è stato irretito da Jude la donna del gruppo. Se gli inglesi non accetteranno lo scambio con un altro prigioniero irlandese, Fergus, un altro militare, ucciderà il rapito. Ma Fergus non è un malvagio e nei giorni di cattività dell'ostaggio si comporta con lui più che umanamente (via il cappuccio soffocante, molte parole pazienti, un po' di aiuto nei momenti delle necessità fisiologiche). Portandolo sul luogo dell'esecuzione, Fergus, che è solo, vedendo fuggire Jody, non ha il coraggio di sparargli vilmente alle spalle: tuttavia Jody muore investito da un blindato inglese in transito fra i boschi. Lasciati i compagni, Fergus va a fare il muratore a Londra, non solo tentando di dimenticare i propri rimorsi, ma perchè il morto gi ha lasciato un compito assai insolito: quello di proteggere la moglie Dil che fa la parrucchiera e frequenta il bar Metro. A lei Fergus deve portare l'ultimo messaggio d'amore, così come ha fermamente promesso a Jody.
