     In the early nineties, theater director André Gregory mounted a series of

spare, private performances of Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya in a crumbling

Manhattan playhouse. This experiment in pure theater—featuring a remarkable cast

of actors, including Wallace Shawn, Julianne Moore, Brooke Smith, and George

Gaynes—would have been lost to time had it not been captured on film, with subtle

cinematic brilliance, by Louis Malle.

My Notes



   A recent BBC production of Uncle Vanya was shot in an empty theatre

with no audience during the pandemic of 2020.  It is available on this site.  

That reminded of this film from the 1990's by Andre Gregory.  This is the same

Andre from Wallace Shawn's intimate film of conversation, "My Dinner With Andre."

I've seen that several times.  The first time I saw it I made little sense of

it.  On subsequent viewings it revealed that the type of theatre and environment

of those 1960's experiments was something I had always sought out.  You see the

names were not mentioned, the viewer had to piece it together.  At least I did.



  Here in "Vanya on 42nd Street" is a different type of theatre experiment.



  Included from the reissued-remastered edition is the 35 minute documentary

on the film.  David Mamet's translation seems markedly different from the more

recent and formal BBC version but carries different details.



 I have added a few subtitles.  You can add more using the help file

in this upload folder.



 This remastered version on DVD should be available in all libraries.

 Blu ray is also available.  But I've made the recode from the new remastered

edition and it appears that soft focus of the film is ok for viewing.



  A documentary on Andre Gregory is available.  I saw it ten years ago.  It

reveals many things not hinted at in any of these video elements of play or

featurette. It is called "Andre Gregory: Before and After Dinner" by Cindy Klein.
