Inland Empire - L'impero della mente, film thriller scritto, diretto e montato da David Lynch, racconta storie diverse che si intrecciano nella cittadina di Los Angeles. In una stanza d’albergo c’è una giovane prostituta polacca che sta piangendo dopo essere stata con un cliente. Intanto la televisione è accesa e trasmette una strana sitcom con conigli dalle sembianze umane. Poi c'è Nikki Grace (Laura Dern), un'attrice che desidera con tutta se stessa recitare nei panni di Susan nel film On High in Blue Tomorrows. Il giorno prima del provino, va a trovarla la sua vicina di casa, una signora molto anziana (Grace Zabriskie), che le assicura che si aggiudicherà il ruolo, cominciando a farle moltissime domande sulla trama del film.

E così accade: l’attrice ottiene la parte e iniziano le riprese. Giorno dopo giorno, tuttavia, la ragazza si immedesima talmente tanto nel personaggio, che non riesce più a distinguere la sua vera identità. Questo la spinge a intrattenere una relazione perversa con Devon (Justin Theroux), l'attore protagonista, e Billy, il personaggio che lui interpreta. L'attrice vede se stessa e il suo alter ego confondersi in tante dimensioni diverse, come se le bastasse andare dietro le quinte per trovarsi in un posto nuovo. La situazione si complica ancora di più quando compare una donna con un cacciavite che vuole aggredirla…
