Sopravvissuto - The Martian è un film del 2015 diretto da Ridley Scott. L’equipaggio della missione NASA, Ares 3, si trova sulla base spaziale di Marte. Quando una violenta tempesta di sabbia compromette la permanenza sul pianeta, l’equipaggio abbandona la missione e fa ritorno sulla Terra. A causa del forte vento, tuttavia, l’astronauta Mark Watney (Matt Damon) rimane ferito ed è dato per disperso dai suoi compagni. Così, Mark viene erroneamente abbandonato su Marte con poche risorse e nessuna speranza di tornare a casa. Grazie al suo ingegno e ai suoi studi di ingegneria botanica, l’astronauta riesce a costruire una serra per coltivare patate, in modo da ricevere il sostentamento necessario per sopravvivere fino a quando non riuscirà a contattare la Terra.

La NASA, intanto, continua a monitorare l’area e sospetta che l’uomo sia ancora sul pianeta. È Watney stesso a confermare la sua presenza nella base spaziale, comunicando attraverso il dispositivo Mars Pathfinder. Grazie a elaborati calcoli matematici, infatti, l’uomo stabilisce una connessione con la base terreste e invia aggiornamenti sulle sue condizioni. La NASA vorrebbe nascondere al resto dell’equipaggio la folle scoperta ma l’insistenza del team costringe i superiori a metterli al corrente dell’errore che hanno compiuto, durante la precipitosa fuga. Mentre gli astronauti cercano il modo più veloce e sicuro per recuperare il loro collega, la serra di Watney viene gravemente danneggiata e l’uomo rimane senza rifornimenti. Proprio quando tutto sembra ormai perduto, il giovane astrodinamico, Rich Purnell (Donald Glover), escogita un brillante, ma rischioso piano, per permettere ai membri dell’Ares 3 di tornare su Marte…
