This is a modern story of love gone wrong. Ruth Rendell makes it even more effective by telling the story from Guy,the pursuer's, point of view. He narrates as if
everything is normal and Leonra is still in love with him. It is quickly obvious to the reader that she is not, she is merely being tolerant of his attentions. As the
plot develops, the charade becomes more complex as Guy's jealousy materialises into murderous rage. But against whom? The ending is both chilling and tragic as Guy
appears to have evolved and changed throughout the action. And at the same time Leonora no longer seems so angelic when her actions are revealed. The ending, believe
me, is not the ending you expect.
