Book two of "The Haunting of Derek Stone" series catches up with Derek during an adrenaline-fueled game of cat and mouse. As ghost Virgil Black guides Derek through the husk of his dead brother Ronny's body, the two get closer to discovering why the dead are hunting Derek. A girl who awakens from a coma provides valuable information, while a chance meeting with a man named Smitty Fouks brings a message to Derek giving him no choice but to return to his least favorite place, the swampy Bayou Malpierre. The bayou is home to a near-death experience for Derek, and the home of a peculiar boy named Waldo whose sunny cherub-like tendencies are anything but angelic. Considering the plot, the book is surprisingly light at times. It does not involve zombies, but rather two souls trying to exist in the same deceased body through a process called translation. It is a quirky adventure complete with humor and a touch of dark wonder. As clues appear and conspiracies multiply, the reader's mind will search for answers in one direction only to be pleasantly swept away by intriguing plot twists. Reviewer: Renee Farrah
