Ensign Sebastian Early is proud to serve in the British army in South Africa, but his desire to fight with his comrades and climb the military ladder is sidetracked when his best friend is accidentally killed. In tribute, Seb takes over his friend’s job as provost-marshal, acting as a military policeman during the Zulu Wars. While others are out fighting, he is investigating crimes with a deaf sergeant and a native he hires as a servant. Seb is not a natural detective, and his dogged approach and lesser rank irritate many officers. Feeling utterly lost, he is also charged by Lieutenant-General Lord Chelmsford to keep a watch on a Boer tracker. The tracker has more respect for the Zulus than the British, and perceives Seb as an annoyance rather than a worthy adversary. Kilworth breathes life into history with vivid battle scenes, convincing characters, especially Ensign Early, and a cameo appearance by Early’s relative Captain Jack, who hails from Kilworth’s Fancy Jack series.
