This novella prequel to Mira Grant’s Newsflesh trilogy is a fantastic compliment to the series. Countdown is comprised of a series of shorter stories that follow the lives of the people who become key individuals in what the Newsflesh trilogy refers to as the Rising.

Though it is shorter than the novels that make up the Newsflesh trilogy, Mira/Seannan’s writing is the same style and quality as in her longer works. Her prowess at balancing characters like scientific geniuses, heartbroken mothers and good dogs makes this novella a must read. Though this is a prequel I suggest reading Feed before reading Countdown. It will make the characters and their stories that much more intriguing, heartbreaking, and terrifying.
