Arabië in de jaren 30. De tijd van een ontdekking die de hele wereld zal veranderen; het zwarte goud, olie. De jonge Arabische prins Auda (Tahar Rahim) die getrouwd is met de beeldschone Leyla (Freida Pinto) raakt verwikkeld in een strijd tussen twee rivaliserende Emirs. De een is zijn conservatieve vader Amar (Mark Strong) en de ander zijn moderne, liberale schoonvader Nesib (Antonio Banderas). Het pact tussen de Emirs over het niemandsland 'De Gouden Gordel' wordt geschonden, nadat Nesib het land gebruikt voor olie-exploitatie aan een Amerikaanse bedrijf. Auda komt voor een keuze te staan waarbij hij moet kiezen tussen zijn afkomst en toekomst.
