It is only within the last 100 years that scholars have begun to piece together the history of the many peoples and civilizations which make up the cotinent of Africa. This has been done by a combined study of the limited archeological data available, the relatively small amount ofwritten evidence and the hitherto mistrusted but valuable sources of information provided by tribal folklore and oral history. As a result, the study of African art within a historical framework is still very much in its infancy.
