Clyde Stubblefield was the funky drummer -- the man that played the infamous
break on James Brown's classic "Funky Drummer, Pt. 2." It makes sense that
he would try to cash in on his notoriety with Revenge of the Funky Drummer,
his first solo album. Granted, it's a little surprising that it arrives in 1997, s
even years after the "Funky Drummer" loop hit its peak of popularity. It's also
a little surprising that the album downplays his strengths, choosing to saddle him
with a big band and murky production. It would have been better to hear
Stubblefield in a spare setting where his playing would have shined, but there
enough rhythmic flourishes scattered across the record to illustrate why he is
the funky drummer.
