Montalbano must solve two intricate cases: the disappearance of a merchant who apparently refused to pay the protection money to the mafia and a series of mysterious lightning kidnappings. The missing merchant is Marcello Di Carlo, owner of an antiques shop; a few days after his disappearance, the shop is set on fire and a mafia revenge is thought of. At the same time something very strange happens: a masked kidnapper deceives some girls, kidnaps them for a few hours and then frees them in the countryside without harming them or robbing them. These lightning-fast kidnappings seem incomprehensible but Montalbano understands that the fire of the shop and the apparently very different kidnappings are actually linked.
