After the demolition of an old silos, a diary written in the summer of 1943 by a young fascist, Carlo Colussi, arrives in Montalbano through Nicoló Zito, who confesses in the pages that he has committed a terrible act. This discovery is intertwined with the arrival in Vigata of a ninety-year-old Italian American, John Zuck, who tells the commissioner that he was born in the Sicilian town, that he was actually called Giovanni Zuccotti, that he was taken prisoner by the allies during the war and in following staying in the United States after being orphaned. Montalbano links the facts of the diary and of Zuck to the killing of the old entrepreneur Angelino Todaro: in his youth he had killed Zuck's parents on behalf of a lawyer who would have taken possession of their land and after many years the American took revenge . Self-accused in front of the commissioner, Zuck commits suicide on the beach by shooting himself in the head. The terrible act carried out by Colussi had been a massacre of allied soldiers, with innocent victims, guilty of having raped his girlfriend. To atone for his grave sin, the man later became a priest and a missionary. The meeting with the now ninety-year-old Colussi directs Montalbano's investigations away from the diary, aimed at discovering Todaro's murderer, after at first the commissioner had believed that the two facts were connected. At the same time, Montalbano receives the news of Pasquano's death following a brief illness, Montalbano and the others of the police force participate in the doctor's funeral.
