Lucy in the Sky, il film diretto da Noah Hawley, è ispirato a fatti realmente accaduti e ha come protagonista della storia Lucy (Natalie Portman), un'astronauta reduce da una missione nello spazio. Durante la spedizione, la donna rimane alcuni minuti di troppo nel vuoto cosmico a osservare la Terra e a riflettere sulla propria vita. Al suo ritorno, Lucy avverte un forte bisogno di tornare lassù, tra le stelle, e appare decisamente cambiata, manifestando comportamenti fuori dalla norma.

Quello che subisce maggiormente le conseguenze del suo cambiamento è il matrimonio, l'astronauta infatti intreccia una relazione extraconiugale con il collega Mark Goodwin (Jon Hamm). Quando Lucy scopre che l'uomo la tradisce con una cadetta, va totalmente fuori di testa e finisce per perdere ogni contatto con la propria famiglia e con la realtà circostante.

Il desiderio inappagato di tornare nello spazio, la relazione con Goodwin e il tradimento di quest'ultimo sono solo alcuni dei fattori che la trascineranno in un abisso, nel quale sprofonda senza possibilità di riemergere.
