Kenny 'Blues Boss' Wayne

Kenny 'Blues Boss' Wayne in 2014

Wikipedia:
Kenny "Blues Boss" Wayne (born Kenneth Wayne Spruell in 1944) is an American blues, boogie-woogie and jazz pianist, singer and songwriter. Music journalist, Jeff Johnson, writing in the Chicago Sun-Times stated, "There's no boogie-woogie-blues piano man out there today who pounds the 88's with the conviction of Kenny "Blues Boss" Wayne."
Wayne was born in Spokane, Washington, but he relocated with his family to San Francisco, California at an early age. His parents alternatively advised for and against the blues, but his mother's influence led Wayne to be influenced early by Nat King Cole, Little Willie John, and Fats Domino. The family moved in turn to New Orleans, Los Angeles and Compton, California. While he was growing up, Wayne drew further inspiration from The Three Sounds, George Shearing, Erroll Garner, Cal Tjader, Mongo Santamaría, Ray Charles, Charles Brown, Floyd Dixon, Big Joe Turner, and Jimmy Reed.
Based in Los Angeles during the 1960s and 1970s, Wayne was utilised as a sideman by various pop and rock musicians. In the 1980s Wayne relocated again to Vancouver, British Columbia. "Blues Boss" (his nickname was acquired from the title of Amos Milburn's comeback album with Motown Records) undertook a tour of Europe in 1994. Wayne dedicated his debut album to his parents, and 2002 heralded the issue of 88th & Jump Street, followed by Blues Carry Me Home (2003) and Let It Loose (2005).
His festival appearances have included Edmonton's Labatt Blues Festival (2004) and Koktebel Jazz Festival (2006).
In May 2008, Wayne issued his album, Can't Stop Now. Wayne's most recent release, Rollin' with the Blues Boss (2014), included guest contributions from Diunna Greenleaf and Eric Bibb.
Nominated in 1997, 1999 and 2003 for 'Best Blues Album,' Wayne was presented with a Juno Award in 2006 for Let It Loose.

Kenny "Blues Boss" Wayne is one of the busiest artists in the international blues community. With special guests Eric Bibb and Diunna Greenleaf, Kenny hammers out rockin' boogie woogie, deeply felt blues, and puts a fresh coat of paint on good old-fashioned roots rock and roll. A multiple award winner, he is a monster pianist, and soulful singer, who captures the essence of old school blues and boogie while sounding totally fresh and contemporary.

AllMusic Review by Steve Leggett:
Born in 1944, Kenny "Blues Boss" Wayne is a prime example of how to merge premier old-time boogie-woogie stride piano with a modern and contemporary blues sound, and when he's at his best, it's hard to imagine that his original songs aren't sturdy old traditional classics. On Rollin' with the Blues Boss, his second album with Stony Plain Records, Wayne does what's he's always done, slinging boogie-woogie piano, early R&B, and some New Orleans stride into a thoroughly modern gumbo that transcends time and labels, all while being thoroughly and firmly the blues. Helped by his warm and soulful voice, which shines with sincerity and humor by turns, he hits all the blues corners once again, beginning with the opening track, "Leavin' in the Morning," a stomping blue shuffle that hits all the standard blues motifs without sounding tired and stale. "Hootenanny Boogie-Woogie" is a fun and just a little tongue-in-cheek dance number. "Baby, It Ain't You" is a slow-burning, soulful blues ballad. Then it's back to full-tilt boogie for the wonderful "Two Sides," while "Keep on Rockin'" is a 1950s-styled R&B stomp, and by the set closer, where Wayne rolls out his nimble and unblemished stride piano style for "Out Like a Bullet," it's obvious he has touched nearly every form of modern blues, making it all one somehow, a testament to his talent both as a songwriter and musician. He doesn't break any new ground here, but then again, why would he need to?
