Dopo Eight days a week, che raccontava la nascita del mito e l'incredibile "stagione" live dei ragazzi di Liverpool, il film The Beatles: Sgt Pepper & Beyond affronta i dodici mesi più cruciali della carriera della band: l'anno in cui i Fab Four sospesero i tour diventando gli artisti più innovativi del mondo in sala di registrazione. Nel film immagini e interviste inedite che raccontano il periodo magico degli Abbey Road Studios, la nascita delle canzoni e il lancio dell’album che più di ogni altro ha segnato la loro storia. Un nuovo capitolo per approfondire quell'avventura che forse è ancora oggi la più rivoluzionaria del panorama culturale mondiale. Grande amante della band sin dall'età di 9 anni, il regista del film, Alan G. Parker, ha deciso di analizzare quel periodo così decisivo incontrando molti testimoni di quegli eventi e accompagnando i loro racconti con una gran quantità di filmati di archivio, di cui una gran parte inedita. Il risultato è un'analisi approfondita del motivo per il quale la band decise di interrompere i tour, di come fu realizzato l'album e delle sessioni di registrazione presso gli studi di Abbey Road, della Emi. Nel film vengono analizzati anche i testi delle loro canzoni e la creazione della celebre copertina dell'album, senza dimenticare la risposta dei fan all’uscita dell’album nei negozi. Il tutto è arricchito da curiosi retroscena sulle ragioni dei problemi tra i membri della band e il loro manager, Brian Epstein; la tragica morte di quest'ultimo; la creazione della Apple e la fortissima influenza esercitata sui Beatles da Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
