Il Colore Della Libertà, film diretto da Barry Alexander Brown, è ambientato nell'estate del 1961 e segue le vicende di un giovane nativo dell'Alabama, Bob Zellner (Lucas Till), che aderisce al Movimento per i diritti civili, ispirato dalle parole di Martin Luther King Jr., da Rosa Park e dalle manifestazioni degli studenti dei licei locali, volti a protestare contro l'assassinio di Herbert Lee.

Il ragazzo, però, è nipote di un membro del Ku Klux Klan, J.O. Zellner (Brian Dennehy), e si trova per questo in una posizione scomoda, perché per inserirsi nel movimento e combattere l'ingiustizia sociale, la repressione e la violenza sugli afroamericani, è costretto a sfidare la sua famiglia e le leggi dei bianchi del sud.
