Cattive Acque, il film di Todd Haynes, è basato su una storia vera che vede protagonista un tenace avvocato, Robert Bilott (Mark Ruffalo), difensore delle imprese che esercita a Cincinnati, in Ohio. Un giorno si presenta nel suo ufficio il contadino Wilbur Tennant (Bill Camp), suo vecchio conoscente, per chiedergli aiuto. L'uomo ha con sé scatole di videocassette per dimostrare che la morte delle sue 190 mucche non sia naturale e vuole che l'avvocato si faccia carico della sua causa. Robert, però, non ha tempo e non gli presta attenzione.

In seguito, il legale si reca nel suo paese natale, Parkersburg, in West Virginia, per far visita a sua nonna e incontrare Wilbur fuori dal posto di lavoro. L'allevatore gli mostra i nastri, nei quali sono visibili i cadaveri delle mucche, morte a causa di una strana e inspiegabile malattia. Wilbur è convinto che la colpa sia da attribuire alla compagnia DuPont, una multinazionale sita in città. Avendo preso a cuore la causa, Robert pur di portare a galla la verità, sarà disposto ad affrontare un processo che metterà a repentaglio il futuro della sua carriera, la sua famiglia e la sua stessa vita.Inizia così una lotta legale lunga quasi vent'anni, nella quale Billott cerca di salvare circa 70 mila cittadini a rischio avvelenamento a causa della contaminazione delle acque da parte di DuPont con l'acido perfluorooctanico.
