Lo sceneggiatore Ben, un alcolizzato cronico, dopo essere stato licenziato brucia quasi tutti i suoi effetti personali, passaporto compreso, e raccolti tutti i suoi risparmi decide di andare a Las Vegas ad ubriacarsi fino a morire. Qui incontra Sara, una prostituta di origini russe, anche lei fuggita da Los Angeles e dal suo protettore Yuri, che però l'ha seguita fin lì e la obbliga a lavorare ancora per lui. Quando la mafia russa uccide l'uomo, Sara, libera e incuriosita da Ben che pur incapace di possederla fisicamente la attrae, lo accoglie in casa. Ben la mette da subito in guardia sull'inevitabile corso degli eventi. I due vanno a giocare al Casinò, lui dà in escandescenze e lei deve salvarlo dalla vigilanza. Si scambiano regali e sorrisi, e decidono di andare in vacanza in un motel nel deserto, ma anche qui vengono cacciati via per le intemperanze di lui. Sara, dopo aver invano implorato Ben di chiamare un medico, esce per guadagnare del denaro. Ben va al casinò e gioca: le sue vincite attirano una prostituta con la quale Sara lo trova al rientro. Offesa, lo caccia. La donna, distrutta ed abbattuta, commette poi l'imprudenza di farsi avvicinare da tre giovani studenti di un college che la seviziano. Poi una sera ecco giungere la telefonata di Ben: è allo stremo. In un ultimo sussulto di vita fa l'amore con lei prima di spirare all'alba del mattino seguente.
