Una bugia di troppo, film diretto da Brian Robbins, racconta la storia di Jack McCall (Eddie Murphy), vivace agente letterario dalla pronta parlantina che non perde nessuna occasione per concludere un affare, anche se ciò implica mentire. Il suo nuovo cliente da conquistare è il Dr. Sinja, un guru spirituale New Age: l’incontro sembra andare per il meglio e i due stringono un accordo, sebbene il santone scorga in Jack il seme dell’inganno.

Quella stessa notte, nel giardino della casa di McCall appare dal nulla un misterioso albero con mille foglie. Dr. Sinja accorre nella villa dell’agente e rivela che si tratta di un albero Bodhi: tutte le volte che Jack pronuncia o scrive una parola, una foglia della pianta cade. Quando saranno cadute sul suolo tutte le foglie, l’alberò morirà e così anche lui.

Per evitare che ciò accada, Jack deve trovare altri modi per comunicare: costretto a scegliere con parsimonia le parole da dire e soggetto a una miriade di malintesi, l’agente mette a rischio la sua carriera e il suo matrimonio con Caroline (Kerry Washington), sempre più confusa dallo strano silenzio del marito. Riuscirà Jack a rompere la maledizione prima che sia troppo tardi?
