The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth:

A real-time strategy game developed by EA Los Angeles. The title takes place in the fantasy universe of Middle-Earth created by J.R.R. Tolkien. The game allows the players to participate in two separate campaigns in which they can lead one of 4 nations: riders of Rohan, soldiers of Gondor, army of Isengard and legions of Mordor. Each nation has its advantages and weaknesses. The gameplay combines features of classic RTS games, based on resource gathering and base expansion paired with epic fights during which, similarly as in the Total War series, the player controls whole formations of troops and powerful war machines. Heroes with special powers, such as Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas or Gimli are an interesting addition to the formula. The developers recreated many battles known from the trilogy, including the Battle of Helm’s Deep during which as much as 500 units can appear on the screen simultaneously. Graphics of the title are generated by the engine that was previously used in Command & Conquer: Generals.

The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth for PC / Windows allows playing in single- and in multiplayer mode through local network and Internet. Singleplayer offers two campaigns (a total of around 30 missions), one for the forces of good and one for the forces of evil. There are four nations available – riders of Rohan, soldiers of Gondor, army of Isengard and legions of Mordor. Each nation has unique weapons, tactics and resources they use – in general, each has its advantages and weaknesses. For example, riders of Rohan are using fast cavalry units, Gondor has excellent infantry that are especially useful in defense, Isengard uses Uruk Hai (a combination of humans and orcs) and Mordor has hundreds of orcs and trolls and powerful monsters like Nazguls. Various war machines are used in combat, including siege towers, trebuchets and catapults. During a stronghold siege, various traps can be used by the defenders such as hot oil etc. There are famous and powerful heroes (with their unique spells and powers) participating in combat, including Gandalf, Gimli, Legolas and Aragorn.

Since in The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth for PC / Windows player controls hundreds of units in combat, the developers implemented a more advanced command system than in majority of RTS games. During large battles, player doesn’t command each unit separately, but instead gives orders to whole battalions and companies (the system is similar to the one from the Total War series).

The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth II:

A sequel to the bestselling real-time strategy based on the very popular Lord of the Rings book trilogy and its cinematic adaptation. This time the action takes place in the northern areas of Middle-Earth where combined forces of humans, elves and dwarves face the army of evil Sauron represented by orcs of Mordor and Isengard. Players can play 15 scenarios per each side of the conflict. The second installment in the series uses the mechanics from the original game while introducing many improvements. It is now possible for players to create their own heroes and improve his skills during the game. Lists of available units, weapons and spells were increased and the fights now take place not only on land, but on sea as well. Thanks to the improved SAGE engine, graphics of the game were enhanced, as were the looks and number of units appearing simultaneously on the screen.

The story of The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth II for PC / Windows takes place in the northern areas of the Middle-Earth, where the forces of evil Sauron (armies of Goblins, Mordor and Isengard) are fighting the combined armies of Elves, Dwarves and western humans (Rohan and Gondor). The developers created fifteen scenarios for each playable side of the conflict in the singleplayer campaign. In comparison to the previous installment, the game introduces new units which player can control (infantry of dwarves, elven wizards, goblin fighters etc.) and new heroes (including Elrond, Arwen, Dain, Glorfindel and Haldir).

The title introduces the possibility for players to create their own hero (select its look, attributes, equipment etc.) and control his development. Gathered experience points can be distributed between abilities or other attributes and make the hero stronger as the game progresses. The number of available spells was doubled and there are more weapons and items that can be used during the battles. The limit of space for placing new buildings from the first game in the series was removed – now players can freely decide where to place their bases.

While the first game took place only on land, The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth II for PC / Windows introduces sea operations (battles, army landings etc.). There are transport and military ships available to control (White Ships of the Elves, Black Ships and Corsairs fighting for Sauron). The developers introduced various improvements for multiplayer modes (new rivalry options, improved server communications etc.).

The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle Earth II – The Rise of the Witch-King:

An official expansion for the second installment in The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle Earth series. It requires the basic version of the game to work. The Rise of the Witch-King expansion takes place between the War of the Last Alliance and the journey of the Fellowship of the Ring. This time the developers decided to be more creative and the game tells about the events that J.R.R. Tolkien described rather sparsely. The story of the expansion concentrates on the Witch-king of Angmar whose objective is to conquest the kingdoms of Arnor. The player assumes the role of the titular character and he must build power of his army and participate in the great conquests for the glory of Sauron. The gameplay in The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle Earth II: The Rise of the Witch-King doesn’t differ from the one used in the basic version of the game. However, the expansion offers completely new units (including Thrall Masters and Dark Dunedains) which can be used both during the story campaign and in skirmishes and multiplayer modes. Siege engines appear on the battlefield as well. In addition to that, the races from the basic version of the game received some new units and the AI behavior was greatly improved. The process of character creation has become much clearer and more intuitive.

The PC / Windows version of the expansion starts in the ancient, dark kingdom of Angmar which is ruled by the powerful Witch-King. Filled with lust for power and new conquests, the tyrant turns his eyes towards the kingdom of Arnor (the homeland of the ancestors of Aragorn). The player is tasked with playing the whole campaign, starting with fortifying the position in Angmar, through gathering a great army (which consists, among other units, of Thrall Masters, Sorcerers and Dark Dunedains), to leading an assault on the proud kingdom of Arnor.

In order to fully enjoy the new side of the conflict, the forces of Angmar can be used in Skirmish, Multiplayer and War of the Ring modes. These are not the only novelties introduced in the PC / Windows version of The Rise of the Witch-King. The developers improved or expanded almost every aspect of the game. Each of the six already playable races received new units. The War of the Ring mode was greatly improved. The artificial intelligence of the opponents was improved as well. New economical features were introduced and siege machines appeared on the battlefield.

Character creation was modified. Most of all, a Troll class was introduced. Many new weapons and armors were added, allowing greater choice and variety of characters. The payment for created character is completely different now. The developers decided to use a simple rule: the price of creating a hero equals the sum of costs of abilities that were assigned to him. Thanks to that, by creating a character with limited ability sets, the player will pay more – it is a good option for the beginning of the campaign. By giving the hero a set of ten powerful abilities one will spend a fortune but his warrior should manage well till the end of the campaign.
