Detective Marlowe, il film diretto da Neil Jordan, è ambientato nel 1939, a Bay City, in California.

Il detective privato Philip Marlowe (Liam Neeson) è irrequieto e solo come sempre e gli affari vanno un po' a rilento. Quand'ecco che arriva una nuova cliente: giovane, bella e ben vestita, Clare Cavendish (Diane Kruger) è la figlia dell'attrice di Hollywood e icona del cinema Dorothy Quincannon (Jessica Lange) e vuole che Marlowe trovi il suo ex amante, un piccolo spacciatore e dongiovanni di nome Nico Peterson. L'indagine di Marlowe lo porta al Corbata Club, punto di riferimento esclusivo e covo di iniquità per i ricchi e potenti di Los Angeles, gestito da Floyd Hanson (Danny Huston), apparentemente cittadino modello, ma custode dello squallido mondo sotterraneo che si nasconde all'interno.

Si diffonde la storia della "morte accidentale" di Nico, ma Marlowe è tutt'altro che convinto. Emerge che la morte è stata inscenata - Nico è ancora vivo - e presto Marlowe si ritrova non solo sotto l'incantesimo della seducente Ms Cavendish, ma anche alle prese con il ventre scandaloso del fiorente business cinematografico di Hollywood, assieme ai membri di una delle famiglie più ricche di Bay City, sviluppando al contempo un singolare apprezzamento per quanto sono disposti a fare per proteggere la loro fortuna
