Note : Time for some more giallo, and with all the zombie and horror stuff, it's sometimes easy that Lucio Fulci directed gialli first, and they're actually really good. Here's his first, starring the great Jean Sorel, supported by Marisa Mell, Elsa Martinelli, Alberto de Mendoza and John Ireland, shot extensively on location in the US, including in the actual gas chamber at San Quentin. It's a tale of sex, betrayal, possible murder, doppelgangers, and paranoid suspicions, all in a swinging late-60s setting, with a fair amount of sleazy nudity, a Riz Ortolani score, and some honestly impeccable visuals, including several split diopter shots, dramatic lighting, funky colors, and some really groovy splitscreen montages.

San Francisco playboy doctor George Dumurrier is married to Susan, who suffers from asthma, but he's carrying on an affair with Jane, a photographer's assistant. While in Reno with Jane for a few days, he receives a call telling him his wife has died of an asthma attack. His brother Henry comforts him, but Jane's sister Marta is hostile. It turns out Jane had a one million dollar life insurance policy, which leads to an insurance agent investigating George, and alerting the police to possible foul play. In the meantime, George and Jane go to a strip club, where platinum blonde stripper Monica bears an uncanny resemblance to George's dead wife, and George soon begins an affair with her. However, evidence turns up seemingly proving George's guilt, Monica disappears, and he's suddenly in a lot more trouble.

This is a quite decent-looking remaster, although the colors are a little duller than I would have liked. Mono tracks both sound fine, shame about the lack of commentary.
