US Power Pop band from Zion, Illinois. In the early 70s, high school friends John Murphy and Gary Klebe decided to form a band, despite their complete lack of musical education and any instruments. Within two years they bought a garage, tools, learned chords and listened to the music they loved - The Beatles, Big Star, Bowie, The Move, Todd Rundgren, Nils Lofgren - trying to find their own style. In the summer of 1973, Jeff Murphy, John Murphy's brother, borrowed money and bought a 4-track tape recorder. The result was the album Heads Or Tails (1974), recorded entirely at home. They also created their own label - Black Vinyl Records. In 1977, Shoes recorded Black Vinyl Shoes in Jeff Murphy's living room, pressing 1,000 copies on their own label. The album was sold at local record stores and by mail order through Bomp! In total, the group recorded a dozen and a half albums.
