Tommy Steele was the first British rock'n'roll star and the most successful home-grown rock'n'roller of the 1950s - outpacing legends like Cliff Richard, Marty Wilde and Billy Fury. Steele also had a hand in writing many of his biggest hits - a real rarity for any UK artist in that decade.
He was born Thomas Hicks on December 17, 1936, in Bermondsey, South London. When he was 15, he joined the merchant navy and spent the next four years working on the Cunard line. He learned to play the guitar during a stay in hospital, and found that he had a natural talent for singing, songwriting and comedy, which he demonstrated whenever the opportunity arose, both on board and during shore leave.
Musically he was inclined towards Country & Western and was no doubt influenced by Hank Williams (his version of Hank's 'Kaw-Liga' is included here). In the UK, his early musical experience included singing and playing at US airforce bases with Canadian Jack Fallon and his C&W band, The Sons Of The Saddle. Whenever Steele docked in the USA, he made a point of watching and listening to as much music as possible and, according to rock mythology, saw some early TV appearances by C&W upstart Elvis Presley
