Il Dott. Daniel Challis, in piena crisi familiare, è medico di turno in un ospedale americano e si trova a prestare le sue cure ad un uomo in fin di vita aggredito da strani individui. Il malato pronuncia misteriose parole e durante la notte viene ucciso. Daniel ed Ellie Grimbridge, la figlia del morto, che faceva il venditore di giocattoli, vogliono scoprire gli assassini e si mettono sulle tracce di un'ambigua fabbrica di maschere mostruose, propagandate ogni minuto dalla televisione con ritmo ossessivo per invitare i compratori a partecipare alla grande festa in costume di Halloween, che avrà luogo la notte del primo novembre. I due giungono nel paesino della fabbrica, Santa Mira, dove Cochran Conal, il padrone, domina incontrastato sugli abitanti, vive avvolto nel mistero ed ha al suo servizio delle persone molto sospette. Altri orrendi assassinii vengono commessi e le vittime sono persone o troppo curiose o troppo libere nel parlare...
