Nel deserto del Mojave uno squallido ristorante diventa l'epicentro del resoconto finale della Terra; ignari della catastrofe che sta per abbattersi sul pianeta, Bob Hanson, il proprietario del locale, e la cameriera Charlie, prossima al parto, sono intenti al loro lavoro di tutti i giorni, servendo una benestante coppia di periferia, Sandra e Howard e la loro figlia adolescente Audrey, in attesa che il figlio di Bob, Jeep, ripari la loro automobile. Con l'interruzione del segnale televisivo e della linea telefonica, il gruppo realizza di aver perso tutte vie di comunicazione con l'esterno. Mentre cercano di comprendere la ragione del loro isolamento, giunge una donna anziana che gentilmente ordina una bistecca a Charlie, quando le servono la sua ordinazione la donna comincia a sbraitare scioccanti oscenità. In un momento la fragile ed anziana signora genera una forza disumana, sferrando un attacco aggressivo e lasciando Howard gravemente ferito...
