Nick e Libby Parsons vivono felicemente assieme al figlioletto Matty in una lussuosa casa a largo della costa occidentale, dove tengono cocktail e collezionano opere d'arte. Una sera, durante un romantico week-end in barca, Libby si risveglia in stato confusionale trovando tracce di sangue su di lei e per tutta la barca. Nick è scomparso e la polizia vede nella moglie l'unica possibile sospettata. Al processo, Libby viene giudicata colpevole di omicidio e condannata alla reclusione, durante la quale decide di affidare Matty alla sua giovane insegnante Angie. Ma quando le visite in carcere di Angie e Matty si interrompono all'improvviso, Libby fa di tutto per ritrovare le loro tracce e capisce di essere stata vittima di un complotto.
