Il ribelle Jake Pentecost, un tempo promettente pilota Jaeger il cui leggendario padre diede la vita per assicurare la vittoria dell'uomo sui mostruosi "Kaiju", decide di abbandonare il suo addestramento, per ritrovarsi coinvolto nel mondo della criminalità. Quando però una minaccia ancora più inarrestabile rischia di abbattersi sulle nostre città e di mettere in ginocchio l'umanità, la sorella Mako Mori, adesso a capo di una nuova e coraggiosa generazione di piloti cresciuti all'ombra della guerra, dà a Jake un'ultima possibilità per dimostrarsi all'altezza dell'eredità lasciata dal padre. Mentre cercano giustizia per i caduti, la loro unica speranza è unire le forze in una rivolta globale contro l’estinzione. Jake verrà affiancato da Lambert, un talentuoso pilota rivale, e dalla quindicenne Amara, un'hacker di Jaeger.
