Accompanied by two bumbling friends and secretly watched over by ninja Heishirō confronts Kazamatsuri. In the ensuing clash, one friend dies and Heishirō is gravely wounded. He recovers under the care of **Hanbei Mizoguchi**, a retired samurai, and Hanbei’s adopted daughter **Koharu**. Though Mizoguchi urges Heishirō to abandon his quest for vengeance, the young samurai's pride drives him onward. Meanwhile, Kazamatsuri stays at a gambling house run by **Lady Okatsu**, who falls for him. A ninja bribes her to poison him Kazamatsuri tastes the poison, kills Okatsu, and kidnaps Koharu to coerce Mizoguchi into a duel. The final confrontation unfolds near a cliff where Mizoguchi spars with Kazamatsuri using rocks and later steel. Defeated, Kazamatsuri throws himself off the cliff; Heishirō retrieves the sword from the water.
