Il cofanetto comprende 100 volumi con 72 pianisti del XX secolo, ciascuno con due CD e un libretto sulla vita e l' opera del pianista. Il set contiene una varietà di compositori di epoche diverse, dal barocco al classico contemporaneo. Il materiale è il risultato di un' associazione collaborativa tra Philips e una serie di altre etichette, in particolare EMI Classics, poiché nessuna etichetta possedeva un set rappresentativo di registrazioni per ogni pianista considerato significativo. Sono stati utilizzati anche materiali di Warner Classics e Sony Classics.

La maggior parte dei pianisti sono presenti su un solo set, con sedici che appaiono su un secondo set. Sette artisti (Arrau, Brendel, Gilels, Horowitz, Kempff, Richter e Rubinstein) sono presenti in tre set.

Pianofili percettivi hanno segnalato vari errori nel set, tra cui registrazioni errate e l' uso di prese non autorizzate. Ad esempio, il volume Paderewski contiene una performance de "La Leggierezza" di Liszt, che in realtà è stata registrata da Benno Moiseiwitsch, anch' esso incluso nel volume di quest' ultimo. Inoltre, le note di copertina sostengono che la cadenza del pezzo era di Moiseiwitsch, mentre in realtà era di Theodor Leschetizky. Il primo dei due volumi di Cortot fu ritirato quando si scoprì che un' esecuzione precedentemente rifiutata della Kreisleriana di Schumann fu emessa per errore. Il volume è stato ristampato con la presa corretta. La serie è stata anche criticata per la mancanza di rimasterizzazione delle registrazioni storiche, in particolare nella ristampa Hofmann che ha degradato i trasferimenti originariamente emessi da Ward Marston.
