After being struck by lightning, Barry Allen wakes up from his coma to discover he's been given the power of super speed, becoming the Flash, fighting crime in Central City.

Nel season finale della precedente stagione Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) si è sacrificato al posto di Jay Garrick, recandosi all'interno della Forza della Velocità e auto-esiliandosi in un limbo metafisico all’interno della stessa. La Forza della Velocità è di fatto una prigione dalla quale è difficilissimo, se non impossibile, fuggire: per questo l’addio a Iris (Candice Patton) sembra quasi definitivo, proprio quando i due avevano deciso di sposarsi.

Sono passati sei mesi da quando Barry è entrato nella Forza della velocità. Iris, Wally, Cisco e Joe continuano a proteggere la città e combattere i metaumani a Central City, senza avere però grandi risultati.
Dopo l'attacco di un samurai robot, il team flash cerca di riportare Barry a casa. Cisco riesce ad aprire un varco con l'aiuto di Caitlin e a stabilizzare la forza della velocità; ma Barry, una volta tornato, non è più lo stesso: la sua psiche è stata alterata dalla lunga prigionia interdimensionale, dove i concetti di spazio e tempo sono ben diversi da quelli terrestri.

I villains principali di questa stagione saranno Clifford DeVoe, alias Il Pensatore (Neil Sandilands) e la perfida Blacksmith (Katee Sackhoff), il capo di un mercato nero illegale destinato ai supercattivi.
Un altro personaggio dell'Universo DC che incontreremo nel corso delle puntate sarà Elongated Man, che diversamente dal fumetto è un brillante investigatore privato, interpretato da Hartley Sawyer.
