Sarah Whitfield is looking back over seventy-five years, as she waits for her family to arrive to celebrate her birthday. Shattered by divorce after a year of marriage, she meets and marries William, Duke of Whitfield, and lives with him in France. William leaves to fight in the war, and the Germans occupy their home, but Sarah brings up her family, and, after the war, nurses William back to health.
