In 1939 zijn de pogingen van Finland om neutraal te blijven tevergeefs gebleken.
De Russen staan voor de 1.000 km lange grens en willen naar het voorbeeld van Duitsland een Blitzkrieg uitvoeren.
Uiteindelijk worden dit maar liefst 105 dagen wat niet enkel een teken is van Rusland's zwakte.
De Finse verdediging is erg lastig te organiseren. Een grens van maar liefst 1.000 km, veel te weinig manschappen, materieel en een vijand die veel sterker lijkt.
De bedoeling is de Russen te vertragen in de hoop dat hulp van andere naties op tijd komt. Tegenover 180.000 Finnen staan 450.000 Russische soldaten.
De materiële verschillen zijn nog extremer. Tegenover iedere 80 Russische tanks staat er één Finse. Finland concentreert zich op strategische punten en wacht af.
Zodra de Russen aanvallen blijken de Finnen meesters in hinderlagen, aanslagen en sabotage. In kleine beweegbare eenheden op Ski's weten ze de Russen dodelijk te verrassen.
Niet alleen weet Finland lang stand te houden, ze weten zelfs enkele malen geslaagde tegenaanvallen te plaatsen en de Russen weer terug te dringen.
De Finse strijdlust komt de Russen op 250.000 doden te staan waar Finland 25.000 manschappen verliest.
