Helicopter Missions: Series 1

Though relatively new to the fight, helicopters have become an integral part of modern warfare. They scout enemy terrain, deploy soldiers into battle, fight off approaching foes, and save lives. Witness some of the most daring air rescue missions of the last half-century, featuring old, single-engine warhorses and high-tech wonders of ingenuity and design. We examine what made each chopper ideal for its mission and what made it vulnerable, through battle re-enactments and interviews with the heroic pilots who flew into the face of danger.





1)  Vietnam Firefight

Pilot Tom Baca was days from finishing his tour of duty when the distress call came: 100 soldiers had been ambushed, with troops closing in from all sides. Relive the events that followed, as we see how Baca and his team pulled off an amazing rescue.



2)  White Out

It was a deadly game of hide-and-seek, pitting a heavily concealed and armored Iraqi tank against a British helicopter, in wide-open skies, with only a thin, aluminum fuselage for protection. The odds were against the Royal Air Force. Join us as the helicopter pilots of this storied Westland Lynx relive their mission to find and destroy the enemy before being destroyed themselves.



3)  The Taliban Gambit

A dangerous helicopter rescue may be the last hope for a downed US Navy SEAL team ambushed in Afghanistan. Join the Special Operations' harrowing rescue mission.



4)  Duel in the Desert
